How to type accented w on the keyboard
Two dependable methods, demonstrated with ŵ (w with circumflex) — both tested on Windows 11 and Microsoft 365.
Method 1 — Numeric keypad ALT code
WindowsType ŵ into any Windows program using its ALT code, Alt + 373. You need a working numeric keypad with Num Lock on.
- 1Click exactly where you want the accented w letter to appear — in Word, an email, a browser field, anywhere.
- 2Make sure Num Lock is on. On laptops without a separate keypad, enable the embedded keypad first with Fn + Num Lock.
- 3Press and hold the Alt key.
- 4While keeping Alt held, type 373 on the numeric keypad.
- 5Release Alt — ŵ appears where your cursor is parked.
If a code produces the wrong symbol: very long ALT codes (four digits and beyond) can render as a placeholder glyph in older apps. Repeat the same steps inside a Microsoft Word document — Word resolves the full Unicode range correctly, and you can copy the result anywhere else.
Method 2 — Unicode value + Alt X
Word & OfficeEvery character owns a hexadecimal ID — for ŵ it is U+0175. Microsoft Word converts that ID into the character itself.
- 1Open a Word document (or any Office app that supports Unicode).
- 2Type the four-character code 0175 using your regular keyboard.
- 3Without pressing space, hit Alt + X together.
- 4Word swaps the code for the letter — 0175 becomes ŵinstantly.
