U with accent ù ú û ü — copy & ALT codes

U accumulates Europe’s favourite marks: German ü, French ù and û, Spanish ú, Hungarian ű, and Lithuanian ų. The Czech ring (ů) survives only in this letter — a curiosity dating from the sixteenth century. This page collects every accented u recognized by the Unicode Standard — 50 characters in total (24 lowercase, 26 capital and digraph forms)

Each character can be copied with a single click, typed with its ALT code, or produced with the keyboard shortcuts proven below — no memorisation required if you bookmark this page.

How to type accented u on the keyboard

Two dependable methods, demonstrated with ù (u with grave) — both tested on Windows 11 and Microsoft 365.

Method 1 — Numeric keypad ALT code

Windows

Type ù into any Windows program using its ALT code, Alt + 249. You need a working numeric keypad with Num Lock on.

  1. 1Click exactly where you want the accented u letter to appear — in Word, an email, a browser field, anywhere.
  2. 2Make sure Num Lock is on. On laptops without a separate keypad, enable the embedded keypad first with Fn + Num Lock.
  3. 3Press and hold the Alt key.
  4. 4While keeping Alt held, type 249 on the numeric keypad.
  5. 5Release Altù appears where your cursor is parked.
If a code produces the wrong symbol: very long ALT codes (four digits and beyond) can render as a placeholder glyph in older apps. Repeat the same steps inside a Microsoft Word document — Word resolves the full Unicode range correctly, and you can copy the result anywhere else.

Method 2 — Unicode value + Alt X

Word & Office

Every character owns a hexadecimal ID — for ù it is U+00F9. Microsoft Word converts that ID into the character itself.

  1. 1Open a Word document (or any Office app that supports Unicode).
  2. 2Type the four-character code 00F9 using your regular keyboard.
  3. 3Without pressing space, hit Alt + X together.
  4. 4Word swaps the code for the letter — 00F9 becomes ùinstantly.
This trick works both ways: place your cursor after any accented character and press Alt + X to reveal its Unicode value. It is the fastest way to identify a mystery character you have received in a document.

Accented U — questions people ask

The Windows ALT code for ù (Latin Small Letter U with Grave) is Alt + 249. Hold Alt, type 2, 4, 9 on the numeric keypad and release Alt. Inside Word you can type 00F9 followed by Alt + X instead — or simply click the character on this page to copy it.

On Windows use Alt + 217 with the numeric keypad; in Microsoft Word type 00D9 then press Alt + X. On a Mac, press the matching Option-key accent, release, then type Shift + U. Copy-and-paste from the grid above works in every program.

Hold the Option key together with the accent key, release, then press u. Option + E applies an acute accent, Option + ` a grave, Option + I a circumflex, Option + N a tilde and Option + U an umlaut. Alternatively press and hold the u key and a pop-up menu lists every variation.

Characters beyond the first 256 code points need full Unicode support. When a long ALT code shows a placeholder symbol, redo the steps inside Word — it resolves the complete range — or copy the letter directly from this page, which works in every modern application.
