E is the workhorse of accented letters. French alone needs four of them — é, è, ê and ë — each with a distinct sound. Macrons (ē) lengthen it in Latvian and romanised Japanese, ę nasalises it in Polish, and ě reshapes it in Czech. How to type accented e on the keyboard

Two dependable methods, demonstrated with è (e with grave) — both tested on Windows 11 and Microsoft 365.

Method 1 — Numeric keypad ALT code

Windows

Type è into any Windows program using its ALT code, Alt + 232. You need a working numeric keypad with Num Lock on.

1Click exactly where you want the accented e letter to appear — in Word, an email, a browser field, anywhere.
2Make sure Num Lock is on. On laptops without a separate keypad, enable the embedded keypad first with Fn + Num Lock.
3Press and hold the Alt key.
4While keeping Alt held, type 232 on the numeric keypad.
5Release Alt — è appears where your cursor is parked.

If a code produces the wrong symbol: very long ALT codes (four digits and beyond) can render as a placeholder glyph in older apps. Repeat the same steps inside a Microsoft Word document — Word resolves the full Unicode range correctly, and you can copy the result anywhere else.

Method 2 — Unicode value + Alt X

Word & Office

Every character owns a hexadecimal ID — for è it is U+00E8. Microsoft Word converts that ID into the character itself.

1Open a Word document (or any Office app that supports Unicode).
2Type the four-character code 00E8 using your regular keyboard.
3Without pressing space, hit Alt + X together.
4Word swaps the code for the letter — 00E8 becomes èinstantly.

This trick works both ways: place your cursor after any accented character and press Alt + X to reveal its Unicode value. It is the fastest way to identify a mystery character you have received in a document.

The Windows ALT code for è (Latin Small Letter E with Grave) is Alt + 232. Hold Alt, type 2, 3, 2 on the numeric keypad and release Alt. Inside Word you can type 00E8 followed by Alt + X instead — or simply click the character on this page to copy it.

On Windows use Alt + 200 with the numeric keypad; in Microsoft Word type 00C8 then press Alt + X. On a Mac, press the matching Option-key accent, release, then type Shift + E. Copy-and-paste from the grid above works in every program.
